Aims and Scope

Journal of Chinese Cinemas is a major refereed academic publication devoted to the study of film and media as practiced in Chinese-speaking communities. We consider submissions on any aspect of production, distribution, and reception. We especially welcome essays based on original archival research and/or exploring cross-cultural manifestations of mediation. Objects of study include, but are not limited to, commercial releases, independent films, videos, video art, animation, new media, exhibition conditions, and texts and debates.

Submissions should be constructed around a clear and original argument, explicitly address the cultural and medial contexts, and show familiarity with up-to-date scholarship on the relevant subject, in both English and Chinese. In exceptional cases, the journal will also publish interviews with filmmakers, eye-witness accounts, unpublished translations of already-published key texts, and essays by non-China scholars.

Journal of Chinese Cinemas is a peer-reviewed journal. All essays are reviewed by the co-editors as well as through double anonymized peer review. Detailed Instructions for Authors can be found here.
