Welcome to the third issue of the Australian Journal of Forensic Sciences for 2024. This issue, as usual, encompasses a diverse array of research representing cutting edge innovations across different forensic disciplines. I am sure that there is something of interest to all of our readers.

I am pleased to announce the imminent release of the Special Issue #1 for Volume 56; this represents the publication of extended abstracts from the IAFS/ANZFSS symposium held in 2023. Prof. Adrian Linacre has undertaken significant work in his role as Guest Editor to assemble the abstracts, which number 54 in total. It is pleasing to see this hard work come to fruition and I congratulate Adrian and all the submitting authors. The special issue represents an diverse and interesting array of forensic research from across the globe.

Although it seems that we have only just recovered from the very successful IAFS/ANZFSS symposium, it is already time to start thinking about the next major forensic conference to be held in Australia; the 27th Symposium of the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society will be held in Melbourne from 12-16 October 2025. The theme of the 2025 symposium will be ‘From Foundation to Innovation: Forensic Science in Transition’. The call for abstracts is intended to open on 1 October 2024.
