Structural Civil Engineering is Evolving

The field of structural civil engineering is undergoing a deep transformation, mirroring the dynamic changes observed in our broader society. The daily practice of our discipline is needed to adapt to the evolving landscape dictated by challenges and the imperative for well-being, responsibility, ethics, and social justice. Gone are the days when technical accomplishment alone sufficed—striving for the highest, largest, and longest. Today, engineers are urged to view themselves as pivotal contributors to our societies, embracing a perspective that is both local and global.

Within this intricate and demanding milieu, engineers and their creations confront a spectrum of issues ranging from environmental stewardship and the ramifications of climate change to the advent of digitization marked by the flags of artificial intelligence and robotics. Moreover, considerations of the quality and social dignity of projects, educational imperatives, and ethical quandaries permeate the profession.

Hence, there is an imperative for interdisciplinary and multicultural collaboration, fostering a holistic viewpoint and an ethical compass that fortifies us as both engineers and individuals navigating our technical challenges. It is needed to ensure that our bridges, ports, airports, industries, and all structures bear the ethical hallmark of integral engineering.

The significance of organizations such as IABSE cannot be undervalued, serving as platforms that not only facilitate high-quality technical discussions but also open lanes for confronting novel challenges. These forums provide spaces where diverse perspectives converge, different realities intersect, and the ensuing discourse translates into applied learning and knowledge, ultimately benefiting each of our societies.

In this context, the invitation is extended to engage with the association across the academic, professional, and public domains, fostering a robust integration with the civil engineering community. Various avenues exist for participation, be it through symposiums or congresses (such as the forthcoming one scheduled for Latin America in 2024), the publication of top-tier technical reports, or active involvement in national groups, disseminating knowledge to every corner of our respective countries.

This invitation is inclusive and anticipates that these activities will not only attract senior professionals but also serve as a gateway for new professionals into the field. It is hoped that through their knowledge and participation, they will contribute to the ongoing enrichment of the association, and by extension, to the advancement of the societies to which we all belong.

The invitation stands open to all, and I extend my best regards to those considering participation in these collaborative endeavors.
