Retired Amenity-Oriented Movers: What Do They Consider When Choosing Homes and Neighborhoods in Their New Location?

&
Published online: 05 Apr 2024

Abstract

Mixed methods were used with 60 retirees (mean age = 74) who had moved to a southern coastal region from another state. We explored their relocation neighborhood and home choices to determine whether they considered age-friendly home design, what they were seeking in their neighborhoods, and what they found. Three major neighborhood-related themes emerged related to choices: (1) advantages of moving into a new neighborhood; (2) intergenerational vs age 55+ decision; and (3) desirable characteristics. Respondents also found a prevalence of out-of-state neighbors and some neighborhoods are evolving into naturally occurring retirement communities. Most errands required a car. Respondents were mixed in considering age-friendly home design; half the homes had all three “vistability” features: no-step entry, bathroom on main floor, and wide doorways.
